The Damm Family in Their Car, Los Angeles, USA, 1987.

Mark photographed the Damms, a Los Angeles family who were living in their car and at a shelter for the homeless in North Hollywood, for Life magazine. When she returned to photograph the family again in 1994, she found that their lives were still blighted by violence and drugs. This picture, taken at the end of Mark's first stay with the family, is successful, Mark feels, because it is strongly reminiscent of the classic documentary pictures of Dorothea Lange or Walker Evans.
