AMERICAN PHOTO
THE IMAGE INDEX - MY FAVORITE CAMPAIGN
July/August 1990

Mary Ellen Mark, photographer. “Two campaigns I like that make use of real photographs are Kodak’s ad “The Power of Black and White” and the Barneys ads that use photos by people like Elliott Erwitt. Advertising can be so imitative that it's striking to suddenly see a great, real photograph. A “real photograph” is one taken just because it was a great picture and not just to illustrate a product. The shots used in these two campaigns can stand on their own as great photographs.”
