Jennifer Miller In Her Bath, 'The Bearded Lady', Williamsburg, New York, 1994
Photographer Mary Ellen Mark has made the world her muse as well as her canvas for the last 25 years. Celebrated as much for her far‑flung photojournalism as for her striking portraiture, she has tackled subjects as diverse as Mother Teresa and runaway street children in Seattle, the latter body of work the basis for the movie Streetwise that Mark produced with her husband, photographer/director Mark Bell. To a mantlepiece laden with honors, she has recently added the John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship, the Matrix Award for outstanding woman in film/photography, and the Dr. Erich Salomon Award for exceptional merit in journalistic photography. She has published nine books, including her most recent collection, Indian Circus. A career retrospective of her work, Mary Ellen Mark: 25 Years is currently touring the country.
