We may have broken free from the mother country centuries ago, but no matter. Many of us still have a fascination with all things royal: the palaces, the pomp, the look. Perhaps that's why fashions with a regal touch have been ruling the runways ‑ ladylike, Windsor‑worthy dresses cut from rich fabrics like velvet and satin, trimmed in fur or embellished with splendid details like jewel‑encrusted belts and satin sashes. Not exactly the Queen Mum, they're younger, chicer and more playful. (In short something Prince William might find rather cheeky.) Clothes such as these require a real presence to carry off. Fortunately that is something actress CHLOE SEVIGNY possesses in ample supply. Here the 29‑yearold, who can be seen in the Woody Allen film Melinda and Melinda next year, models luxe looks in settings inspired by the works of 19th‑century portrait artist John Singer Sargent, who was renowned for his paintings of the aristocracy. "I feel as though I belong in the court of Louis XIV," she declares of the effect of one dress. "These clothes give you a posture that befits the regal feeling of it all. You can't help but sit very straight." Call it the ultimate in power dressing.

"This is a very Grecian moment for me," says the actress. Alexander McQueen gown. Gina Couture pumps. Isaac Manevitz for Ben‑Amun choker. fl.J. Grazjano pearl lariat with tassels. Neil Lane gold locket and chandelier earrings.

"This is a very glamorous Little Miss Muffet sat on a tuffet' dress," says the actress. Louis Vuitton bustier dress with pleated taffeta skirt, fur stole with silk satin bow, and pleated satin pumps. Neil Lane diamond rings, necklaces, bangle and brooch.

"A high‑collar, Victorian‑era dress designed in fiery red is shocking," says Sevigny. Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche silk organza gown with fox‑fur trim. Neil Lane earrings. Ten Thousand Things chain. Sage at Fragments locket. Maximal Art at Fragments mesh bracelet. R.J. Graziano bangle.

"Call this a Carrie Bradshaw Sex and the City look," says Sevigny. "She always wore those big, full skirts that had kind of a fifties feel to them." Oscar de la Renta embroidered tulle gown. Mokuba Ribbon velvet sash Neil Lane diamond bow brooch and necklace. Jimmy Choo satin sandals. Cartier diamond bracelet.

“What I love about this dress is the muted pink color,” says Sevigny. Marc Jacobs velvet and‑lace gown. Luisa Beccaria fur cape. Helmut Lang leather open‑toe pumps with nylon pom‑poms Van Cleef & Arpels pearl clover chain and goldand‑diamond watch Alison Daniel Designs ring.

“I feel like a Viking princess in this," the actress says. Proenza Schouler fur jacket with jeweled belt. Neil Lane diamond earrings R.J. Graziano rhinestone filigree bracelets.
