END OF THE ROAD

A third of America’s homeless are families like Linda and Dean Damm and their children (left), who lived for a time in a 1971 Buick Skylark. Having found no work in Colorado for two years, the Damms pawned their wedding rings for $15 and headed for California. By the time they hit the San Fernando Valley, they were down to 10 cents. “Oh Crissy,” said Linda when her daughter cried over a lost teddy bear. “If I cried every time something went wrong, I’d be crying for the rest of my life.”

PERILOUS CHILD’S PLAY

A pair of streetwise kids--two of the 6,000 runaways reported each year in Seattle--toyed with a real gun in a dark alley. Rat (near right) and Mike claimed to carry the Colt .45 for protection against men who might try to pick them up or rob them.
