Mary Ellen Mark, "I've always enjoyed taking pictures of Santa Claus in various forms. I took the photo of a roomful of Saint Nicks as part of a school project back in 1964. They were homeless and dressed the part to solicit donations for a social-services organization. In return, they received free meals and a roof over their heads. Decades later, at several of my annual holiday parties, I shot friends' dogs wearing that iconic hat (or fuzzy antlers). Pictured here are Milouche, Ripley (with the big guy himself), and Gringo. Dogs bring people so much joy. Santa does, too. So I thought, why not combine them?
