Steinunn
2007
Photographs by Mary Ellen Mark

In this collection Steinunn continues her investigation into her Nordic roots, and the result is uniquely inspired. The barren winter landscapes can be felt in the textured and rippled garments dominated by the dark grey and black colours of the textured lava. Like a scientist she investigates nature and picks up a shimmering blue from the lava of the volcano Hekla. The texture of lava moss inspired the mohair bouclé fabrics and the gossamer textiles have the feel of a driven snow. The texture and folds in the fabrics are sometimes reminiscent of ancient Nordic woodcarvings while the outlines are always finely sculpted. The hats add an extra layer of eccentricity. Steinunn shows herself in this collection to be a mature and sophisticated designer with strong Scandinavian roots.

The photographs are taken by Mary Ellen Mark and complement the collection masterfully. They capture both the sharp tailoring and the delicate details of the fabrics. Above all they bring out the strong character of the designs and the effortless quality that is Steinunn's trademark.
