I was looking a long while for Intentions,
For a clue to the history of the past for myself, and for these
chants - and now I have found it,
It is not in those paged fables in the libraries, (them I neither accept nor reject,)
It is no more in the legends than in all else,
It is in the present –it is this earth to-day,
It is in Democracy- (the purport and aim of all the past,) It is the life of one man or one woman to-day - the average man of to-day...
Walt Whitman wrote these words over one hundred years ago. Yet, as the dawn of another century draws near, the search for intentions remains the same. As Americans, that is our heritage. Our country was built on a vision of a better way of life. We are not only encouraged to dream of a brighter tomorrow, we are taught to consider our “intentions” – a way to make our dreams come true.
The US Savings Bonds program offers Americans a pathway to their goals. As a volunteer, you give Americans that gift: an opportunity to bring their future vision into focus, and, more important, a way to make that picture come alive.
