Karen Folger Jacobs was raised in Cheltenham, Pennsylvania, and graduated from Antioch College. She trained as a counselor and held a fellowship in clinical psychiatry at the Langley Porter Neuropsychiatric Institute of the University of California. In 1977 and 1978 she served as consultant to the Presidential Commission on Mental Health. She earned a Ph.D. at Berkeley, where she taught interdisciplinary seminars on women for the anthropology, psychology and sociology departments. She left academe to become a writer. Her earlier book, GIRLSPORTS (Bantam), has been nominated for Best Young Adult Book of 1978. She is now writing another book.
